Kieft-Pro-Seeds

Family

Ranunculaceae

Botanical Name

ANEMONE sylvestris 'Madonna'

Plant Common Name

Madonna Woodland Anemone, Snowdrop Windflower, Woodland Anemone

General Description

Compact and easily started from seed, 'Madonna' produces lots of clear white flowers early in the season. The snowdrop windflower is a hardy, herbaceous perennial that flowers strongly in early spring. Its delicate nodding buds rise and open skyward to show glistening white flowers. It is a native of eastern and central Europe where it inhabits moist, open, montane forests. One caveat is that this perennial spreads and must be given plenty of space to roam.

Woodland anemone grows as a mounded clump of leaves that are maple-shaped but deeply divided to the point of looking toothy. They arise from woody, spreading rhizomes that can spread rapidly. In spring, the plant lifts up a forest of tall flower stems topped by large, open, satiny, white flowers with yellow centers. They may be faintly fragrant, too. The semi-nodding flowers are bee pollinated and followed by attractive fuzzy seed heads.

Grow snowdrop windflower in partial sun to bright shade on well-drained but moist soil that is rich in organic matter. Plant it en masse as a flowering groundcover, to edge a walkway, or for early bloom in a mixed bed or border.
