Family
Ranunculaceae
Botanical Name
ANEMONE vitifolia
Plant Common Name
Grapeleaf Anemone, Vine Anemone
General Description
Even when its pale pink fall flowers are not in bloom, the fuzzy grapeleaf anemone has visually appealing foliage. All across the highland grassland slopes of Central China this herbaceous perennial wildflower prospers. It forms a clump of attractive leaves that rise from semi-woody rhizomes. Plants spread over time to create large clumps.
The attractive compound leaves are rich green and comprised of three to five ternate leaflets with jagged lobes and toothed edges. The attractive leaves have "tomentose" white woolly undersides. Flowering occurs from late midsummer to mid-autumn. Upright, fuzzy, branched stems tower above the foliage and bear clusters of light pink blossoms, each with five or six petals. A crown of yellow stamens punctuates each flower center. Insects pollinate the flowers and the fruits are fuzzy achenes that get caught in the wind and carried away by winter.
Grow fuzzy grapeleaf anemone in a moist, fertile, well-drained soil that is rich with organic matter. Avoid lean sandy soils. This anemone grows well in neutral soils leaning on both the acid or alkaline end, so it's not too picky. In cooler climates it will prosper in partial to nearly full sun, but it's best placed in partial shade. It is most at home in marge mixed borders, bright woodland gardens or wildflower meadows. Spring or fall division may be necessary for specimens grown in smaller garden spaces.
Several cultivated varieties are available. The elegant rose-pink blooms of 'Rose Beauty' have pale pink edges and 'Albadura' offers loads of large, palest pink blooms with golden centers.
