ANEMONE x hybrida 'Whirlwind'
Fall Anemone, Hybrid Anemone, Whirlwind Anemone
The tall stems and nodding flowers of ‘Whirlwind’ put on their long-running aerial display in autumn. This anemone cultivar is descended from hybrids of species native to China. It is a vigorous, hardy, clump-forming perennial that spreads over time to form colonies.
The leaves are medium green, lobed and maple-shaped, and grow in a dense clump from spring through autumn. From late summer to fall and longer, tall stems rise high above the plant, bearing clusters of buds that open in succession to large, buttercup-like white flowers with extra petals. The stems should be cut back once the flowers are spent to keep the plant looking neat.
Grow ‘Whirlwind’ on sites with full sun to partial sun and moist, humus-rich soil. If left undisturbed it will spread vigorously, even invasively, with young plants arising near the original plant. Dig them up as needed to keep the plant in bounds. Plant this anemone in mixed borders and give it ample space. It pairs well with woodland asters, sedges and hostas.
