ANGELONIA angustifolia( SERENA™ SERIES)
Narrowleaf Angelon, Serena™ Angelonia, Summer Snapdragon
Angelonia or summer snapdragon is a tender perennial native to Mexico and the West Indies which is often planted as an annual. The dark green leaves are lance-shaped and evergreen only in frost-free zones. Tall spikes of tubular, two-lipped, snapdragon-like flowers appear throughout the growing season. The ‘Serena’ series plants are compact, branch freely, and produce and abundance of sturdy flower spikes which rarely need staking. The colors available include ‘Serena White,’ ‘Serena Purple,’ ‘Serena Lavender’ and ‘Serena Lavender Pink.’
Angelonia does best in sites with full sun and average, well drained soil. It is freeze sensitive but will take a few degrees of frost. It is also heat tolerant, though flower production will slow in the hottest weather. Plant in the fall and late winter in hot, frost-free areas. Angelonia is very drought tolerant once established though an occasional application of water during the driest times will enhance flowering. The flower spikes are long lasting as cut flowers and deadheading, removal of spent flowers, is not required. Angelonia is beautiful in beds, containers and borders.
