General Description

A hybrid developed as part of a breeding program in Cobbitty, New South Wales, Australia, in 2004, the Slightly Strawberry™ cape mallow freely produces bicolored lavender-pink and red blossoms. Its parentage stems from species native to South Africa. Cape mallow is an evergreen shrub or woody-stemmed perennial with an informal habit. It bears a profusion of pretty flowers from spring until frost or year round in warm climates. Deadheading isn't necessary and plants are drought-tolerant once established.

The Slightly Strawberry™ cape mallow develops a more compact, well-branched and dense habit. The stems support fuzzy, three-lobed, oblong leaves that alternate on the stem. The flowers of this cultivar look a bit like rose-of-Sharon blooms. They are five-petaled, funnel-shaped and lavender-pink with deep red veins and blushing at petal bases.

Plant any hybrid cape mallow in full sun and well-drained soil. Prune it back as needed to produce a bushier plant. It looks best with regular water and fertilization in soils that aren't too fertile; reduce watering in the winter. This mallow is often trained and sold as a tree-like standard. Slightly Strawberry™ is touted as being even more summer-heat tolerant in Mediterranean climates. Light frosts kill the plant back to its base and it will rejuvenate in spring. The cape mallow is pretty both in containers or as part of a mixed border or subtropical cottage garden. Use it as a summer annual in cold winter regions.
