Anthurium

General Description

The compact Smalltalk™ Red hybrid Anthurium produces loads of glossy red flowers through the year above uniform, upright plants with large, heart-shaped green leaves. It was developed by Oglesby Plants International, Inc. in Altha, Florida for the commercial houseplant, interiorscape and tropical landscape markets.

This clump-forming plant has large, spade-shaped leaves that are pleasingly glossy. Like most Anthurium, its leaves tend to shift to track the sun, which is an interesting feature. The profuse showy flowers are produced throughout the year as long as growing conditions remain favorable. Each bloom consists of a reddish finger-like floral column (spadix) surrounded by a glossy red, petal-like leaf (spathe). Female flowers are at the base of the spadix and male flowers are towards the top. This cultivar produces little pollen, so female flowers produce their red berry-like fruits only rarely.

Bright indirect light, high humidity and moist but well-drained medium are required for good growth and flower production. Water and fertilize regularly during the growing season, and make sure outdoor plants are shaded from hot, intense sun. Anthuriums are grown as landscape plants in the tropics and prized as houseplants or tender patio plants in temperate climates. Their fabulous flowers are long-lasting and beautiful when cut for arrangements.
