Botanical Name

ANTIGONON leptopus 'Colvey' PP12800

Plant Common Name

Colvey Coral Vine, Coral Vine

General Description

This is a heavy-blooming, climbing vine with curled tendrils that is native to Mexico. It is a tender perennial vine and has tuberous roots. Colvey coral vine is valuable for its fast growth rate and airy racemes of dark rose-red flowers. Its heart-shaped leaves are attractive and create a nice screen. The flowers appear all year in tropical areas, spring through autumn in areas with cooler winters.

Plant coral vine near a support, such as a fence or trellis, in full sun and evenly moist soil. It is drought tolerant once established, but is more vigorous with applications of water in droughty weather. Coral vine is evergreen in frost-free areas but will re-sprout in the spring in zones where knocked back by frost. It does not survive prolonged freezing temperatures and can be grown in containers or as an annual where not hardy. Antigonon leptopus propagates and spreads easily from seeds, tuberous roots and self-rooting stems. It has naturalized in many tropical climates and is sometimes considered and invasive species.
