General Description

Well-branching, fast-growing and quick to reveal its spikes of deep rosy coral flowers, Solstice Rose snapdragon blooms in the earliest days of spring. A short-lived tender perennial (often used simply as a cool-season annual) it reaches knee-height. From southwestern Europe and the Mediterranean, it bears very early-season flowerspikes (perhaps even in late winter) distinctly lipped flowers that snap open and shut when squeezed, hence the name “snapdragon". Regarded for their good branching and mockery of frost, Solstice Series plants will flower from very late winter to fall, if spent flowerspikes are removed atop the green foliage. When weather is very warm they will cease blooming, seeding and reblooming again in the colder temperatures of autumn. Blossoms attract bees and occasional hummingbirds.

Grow the extremely fast-growing and early flowering 'Solstice Rose' in full sun and moist, well-drained, average soil that has organic matter and moisture. Often used as an annual plant in regions with mild winters, the snapdragon is best reared in fall and winter in warm or hot summer regions. Place a dry, thick mulch over plants in colder climates to help them overwinter without damage. Enjoy this branched snapdragon massed in annual beds on in containers for glorious color in earliest days of spring, and use them as cutflowers in indoor vases.
