General Description

The large beautiful flowers of the long-blooming 'Cameo Mix' cover this dwarf fan columbine in spring. It is a small but vigorous perennial that's an improvement on the species.

Fan columbine is a small clump-forming alpine that’s well adapted to partial sun. It is a Japanese native that forms an attractive small mound of silver-green foliage. The delicate leaves are three-parted with scalloped edges. Despite its small size it offers a big floral show, especially cultivars in the Cameo Series.

Many large short-stemmed blooms rise from the center of 'Cameo Mix' in late spring. The nodding, big flowers look like butterflies in flight and are a rainbow of bicolored blossoms. The mix includes blue and white, pink and white, and rose and white. The inner petals are backed by short hooked spurs which hold nectar for the butterflies and bees that pollinate them.

This hardy perennial is happiest planted in dappled sun and moist, but well-drained fertile soil. It is susceptible to crown rot, which is why good drainage is essential. Plant fan columbine in a rock garden, along a pathway or massed along the edge of a woodland border. It is easy to grow from seed and will gently self-sow.
