AQUILEGIA flabellata 'Mini Star'
Dwarf Fan Columbine, Mini Star Columbine
This entry has yet to be reviewed and approved by L2G editors.
The pretty Mini Star fan columbine is a small clump-forming alpine that’s well adapted to partial sun. It is a Japanese native that forms an attractive small mound of blue-green foliage. The delicate leaves are three-parted with scalloped edges. Despite its small size it offers a nice floral show.
Many short-stemmed blooms rise from the center of the clump in late spring. The nodding, broad-petaled flowers look like butterflies in flight and are commonly have blue outer petals and white inner petals. The inner petals are backed by short hooked spurs which hold nectar for the butterflies and bees that pollinate them.
This hardy perennial is happiest planted in dappled sun and moist but well-drained fertile soil. It is susceptible to crown rot, which is why good drainage is essential. Plant 'Mini Star fan columbine in a shaded rock garden, along pathways or massed along the edge of a woodland border. It is easy to grow from seed and will gently self-sow.
