Botanical Name

AQUILEGIA 'Music Red and Gold'( MUSIC SERIES)

Plant Common Name

Columbine, Music Red and Gold Columbine

General Description

The large flowers of 'Music Red and Gold' columbine are delicate and colorful and stand above vigorous compact plants.

This hardy clump-forming perennial grows from small slender woody rhizomes (underground lateral stems). It offers clusters of rich gray-green scalloped leaves that appear along slender three-parted branches.

The big blooms of 'Music Red and Gold' have five large outer petals/sepals of red that splay outwards and five long tubular spurred inner petals of golden yellow that flare at the mouth and transition to red towards the spur tips. The many flower buds open at different times, prolonging bloom from late spring into summer.

Columbines are easy to grow and prefer full sun to partial shade. They grow in many soils but woodland species prefer evenly moist, organic-rich soil with good drainage. Plants tend to decline slowly and die after a few years. However, this is rarely a disappointment because they reseed themselves almost to the point of weediness, and new replace the old. The leaves often become disfigured in summer by the trailing marks of leaf miners.

Enjoy this colorful heavy-flowering columbine in any partially shaded border. It is wise to plant it among other ornamentals that offer later season color because once it has stopped flowering it has little visual appeal.
