AQUILEGIA 'Music Yellow'( MUSIC SERIES)
Columbine, Music Yellow Columbine
The large flowers of 'Music Yellow' columbine, standing above vigorous compact plants, are strikingly shaped, with a ring of large yellow petals backing a ring of smaller yellow petals. This hardy clump-forming perennial grows from small slender woody rhizomes (underground lateral stems). It offers clusters of rich gray-green scalloped leaves that appear along slender three-parted branches.
The big blooms of 'Music Yellow' have five large outer petals/sepals that splay outwards and five long tubular spurred inner petals that flare at the mouth. The many flower buds open at different times, prolonging bloom from late spring into summer.
These columbines grow and flower best in full sun to partial shade and many soils but prefer evenly moist, organic-rich soil with good drainage. Like most columbines, the plants tend to decline slowly and die after a few years. However, this is rarely a disappointment because they reseed themselves almost to the point of weediness, and new plants replace the old. The leaves often become disfigured in summer by the trailing marks of leaf miners.
Enjoy this colorful heavy-flowering columbine in any partially shaded border. It is wise to plant it among other ornamentals that offer later color because once it has stopped flowering it has little visual appeal.
