AQUILEGIA 'Origami Mix'( ORIGAMI SERIES)
Columbine, Origami Mix Columbine
Cultivars in the Origami Series are compact, heavy-blooming and bloom longer than most. They are even said to flower in the first year from seed.
In spring they put forth open mounds of three parted, soft green, lobed leaves. By late spring to early summer they offer erect stems of upward facing or nodding large spurred flowers in bicolored or solid shades of yellow, violet-blue, pink, red, rose or white. Pretty golden stamens extend from the center of each flower.
Grow columbine in full sun to partial shade and fertile well-drained soil that’s evenly moist. The more sunlight the more important it is the soil has available moisture. They can be short-lived, but self-sow gently to replace themselves; though the seedlings will not come true to seed. Deadhead spent flowers immediately if you don’t want new plants to seed in.
Like all columbine, members of the Origami Series are highly attractive to bees, butterflies and/or hummingbirds. These deer resistant perennials are terrific for open woodland gardens, mixed borders and can even be grown in containers. Columbine flowers are pretty when cut for arrangements, though they are not long-lasting.
