AQUILEGIA vulgaris (WINKY SERIES)

Image of Aquilegia vulgaris (WINKY SERIES)

Yoder Brothers

Family

Ranunculaceae

Botanical Name

AQUILEGIA vulgaris( WINKY SERIES)

Plant Common Name

Common Columbine

General Description

These compact, heavy blooming columbine add a real punch of color to the early perennial garden. In mid-spring they put forth mounds of three-parted, lobed leaves of soft sea green. By late spring to early summer they bear erect stems of upward facing, spurred flowers in solid or bicolored shades of violet-blue, purple, pink, red, rose and white. The five spreading outer petals look starry, and the spurred, tubular inner petals hold nectar for visiting pollinators. Bright golden stamens extend from the center of each flower.

European in origin, these plants grow best in sites with partial sun and fertile, well-drained soil that’s evenly moist. Plants grown in full sun require consistent moisture. Columbines can be short-lived, but self-sow gently to replace themselves; though the seedlings are variable and will not come true to seed. Deadhead spent flowers immediately if you don’t want new plants to seed in.

Columbine flowers are attractive to bees, butterflies and hummingbirds. Dwarf selections like those in the Winky Series are great for containers, shaded rock gardens or border edges. After flowering they offer little to no ornamental interest, so be sure to plant them with annuals and perennials that look pretty later in the season.
