Family

Brassicaceae

Botanical Name

ARABIS x arendsii 'Compinkie'

Plant Common Name

Compinkie Rockcress, Rockcress

General Description

The long-blooming rockcress, ‘Compinkie’, produces a mat of tiny, fuchsia-pink flowers in mid to late spring. This colorful rock garden favorite is a cross between two alpines, the vigorous wall rockcress (Arabis caucasica) and Arabis aubrietioides. It is a short-lived perennials and is evergreen to semi-evergreen.

Its small, oval, light gray-green leaves are slightly hairy and held in loose rosettes along the trailing stems. The small flowers appear in mid-spring in where springs are mild and warm don’t tend to emerge until early summer in alpine regions. Each mildly fragrant, four-petaled bloom is deep fuchsia pink. The flowers attract small butterflies and bees.

Grow 'Compinkie' in full sun and nutrient-poor, gritty, well-drained soil. The plants grow and bloom most freely when given regular moisture during the growing months. In winter they require drier soil because extremely cold, wet conditions can lead to root and stem rot.

When in bloom, ‘Compinkie’ offers an explosion of color. It is best grown along rocky hillside gardens, in troughs or along the front edge of a cottage garden. It tends to thrive for only a couple of years, so expect to replace plants regularly. Thankfully, it is easily grown from seed.
