ARMERIA maritima 'Armada White'( ARMADA SERIES)
Armada White Sea Pinks, Sea Pink, Sea Thrift
A shaggy tuft of a plant, ‘Armada White’ is a white-flowered selection of an evergreen species native to Europe and the Mediterranean region as fast east as Turkey. This sea thrift grows year round in mild climates as a clump of narrow dark-green leaves. In early spring upright stems rise from the clump in profusion and bloom at their tips with a pompom of small white flowers that last almost to summer. It is a charming, extravagant show for a small plant and can be prolonged to summer by deadheading.
In its native region, sea thrift is often found in full sun on very well-drained soil. In wet conditions it will rot, but nonetheless needs some moisture. Its tolerance for alkaline soils makes it a good choice for sites underlain by limestone. Grow ‘Armada White’ on well-drained soil, in containers with good drainage, in troughs, and on elevated sloping ground too poor for other perennials. The leaves may look weatherbeaten after a year so cut them back annually to renew the clump.
