ARTEMISIA 'Powis Castle'
Powis Castle Wormwood, Wormwood
When it comes to super silver foliage nothing performs like ‘Powis Castle’!
This distinctive wormwood is a large, semi-woody, mound-forming, deciduous perennial. From spring to fall it offers feathery silver leaves that partner well with many other flowering ornamentals. In late summer insignificant silver and yellow tinged panicles of blooms may appear, though ‘Powis Castle’ often does not flower. If blooms do appear simply remove them to keep the distinctive soft textured foliage neat looking.
Another benefit of this tough plant is that it is drought tolerant once established. Overall, it grows best in full to partial sun and average soil with good drainage. As the plant’s woody base grows over the years it can begin to look ragged. To maintain a neat shape and dense foliage hard-prune plants back to six-inches above the ground in the spring before they leaf out.
Most valuable for foliar contrast, 'Powis Castle' brightens the garden with silver color and makes yellow, blue and pink-flowered plants shine. For textural contrast, try planting it alongside sweeps of the popular fescue ‘Boulder Blue’ and ‘Neon’ sedum and ‘Moonshine’ yarrow.
