ARTEMISIA stelleriana 'Silver Brocade'
Seashore Wormwood, Silver Brocade Wormwood, Star Wormwood
Low-down, almost prostrate in habit, this selection of the popular foliage annual, Dusty Miller, is prized for its beautiful silver mat of overlapping, small, lobed leaves. The parent species of ‘Silver Brocade’ is native to coastal areas of northern Asia and Japan, and has naturalized in both Europe and the United States. The parent and this selection have proven tolerant of salt air and salty sandy soils. All the same, you can count on ‘Silver Brocade’ to do far better in areas with ordinary drainage, and not much summer rain and humidity. The oil rich fragrance of its kin permeates the whole plant.
This wormwood produces insignificant yellow flower spikes that are typically pruned away to preserve the flat, silvery mat. It makes a fine gray foliage plant to create contrast with other groundcover-scaled perennials. Due to drought resistance and the ability to withstand alkaline soils and sandy gravelly ground as well as solar intensity at high altitude, it makes a perfect perennial for mountain gardens and the far north. Use in the front of a cool colored perennial garden or blend into native and wild gardens.
