Family

Asteraceae

Botanical Name

ASTER alpinus 'Goliath'

Plant Common Name

Alpine Aster

General Description

The cultivar 'Goliath' bears large, pale lilac-blue "daisies" early in the season. It is a selection of Aster alpinus, a spring-blooming aster native to slopes, tundra, and coastlines over much of the upper latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere.

This hardy, short-lived perennial forms a dense hummock of medium-green, spoon-shaped leaves. Daisy-like blossoms with slender ray petals and golden discs are singly borne atop short, sparsely leaved stems in late spring and early summer. Bees are the key pollinators but butterflies also visit them. Fluffy white seedheads ripen in mid- to late summer. Plants may self-sow, but seedlings will not be true to type.

Ample light and sharply drained soil are essential for this carefree, lime-tolerant alpine native. It will not tolerate hot or humid temperatures, so it grows best at high latitudes and altitudes. Mildew or rust may develop during warm humid spells. Use 'Goliath' in rock, trough or alpine gardens, or as a front-line border plant. Seeds and plants are available from catalogs and garden centers.
