Family

Asteraceae

Botanical Name

ASTER novae-angliae 'Honeysong Pink'

Plant Common Name

Honeysong Pink New England Aster, New England Aster

General Description

New England aster ‘Honeysong Pink’ forms a big dome covered with masses of rich pink, yellow-centered daisies in late summer to autumn. The blossoms are complemented by bright green, lance-shaped foliage, and are highly attractive to butterflies and other small, pollinating insects.

Though quite adaptable, New Enland aster performs best in full sun and moderately fertile soil with average to ample moisture. Pinching back of growth tips in late spring to very early summer helps to encourage bushy growth and heavier flowering. Divide clumps every few years in spring, if necessary.

As with other asters, 'Honeysong Pink' is perfect for adding a splash of late-season color to mixed borders and wildflower gardens, and its blooms make excellent, long-lasting cut flowers. For a breathtaking fall display, combine it with ornamental grasses and other late-flowering perennials such as Sedum ‘Matrona’ and ornamental goldenrod (Solidago sphacelata) ‘Golden Fleece’.
