ASTER novi-belgii 'Jenny'

Image of Aster novi-belgii 'Jenny'

Yoder Brothers

Family

Asteraceae

Botanical Name

ASTER novi-belgii 'Jenny'

Plant Common Name

Jenny New York Aster, New York Aster

General Description

New York aster ‘Jenny’ displays many double daisies of vibrant raspberry-pink on rounded, compact plants from late summer into autumn. The brilliant, yellow-centered flowers are complemented by bright green, lance-shaped foliage, and are highly attractive to butterflies and other small, pollinating insects. The seeds that follow provide a source of food for seed-eating birds such as goldfinches.

Although quite adaptable, this perennial performs best in full sun and moderately fertile, well-drained, evenly moist soil. Pinch back growing tips of taller cultivars in late spring to very early summer to encourage bushier growth and heavier flowering. Divide clumps every few years in spring, if necessary.

Fall-blooming asters are outstanding for adding splashes of late-season color to the garden, and their blooms make excellent, long-lasting cut flowers. Shorter cultivars such as ‘Jenny’ are lovely planted in drifts at the front of mixed beds and borders, and also make nice additions to fall-themed container compositions.
