Family

Asteraceae

Botanical Name

ASTER patens

Plant Common Name

Late Purple Aster

General Description

Late season asters like Aster patens brighten the fall landscape with their colorful blooms. The tall, arching stems of this hardy perennial become lined with pale lavender-purple daisies with yellow centers. Wild populations exist in open woodlands and thickets throughout the whole of the eastern United States. Though rarely cultivated, this is a pretty native aster for wildflower and butterfly gardens.

The fine stems of late purple aster are lined with slender, lance-shaped, alternate leaves that are deep green and slightly fuzzy. The flowerheads typically appear from mid to late autumn. Each delicate daisy has a center of yellow disc flowers surrounded by fine, lavender-purple ray petals. Bees are the key pollinators but butterflies also visit them. The fuzzy brown seedheads mature by late fall or early winter.

Woodland asters will tolerate partial sun but also grow well in full. In this wild, this species favors rocky or sandy soils. Plant late purple aster in naturalistic gardens and informal perennial borders.
