Anthony Tesselaar, USA

Family

Saxifragaceae

Botanical Name

ASTILBE 'Beauty of Ernst'( COLORFLASH™, COLORFLASH™ SERIES) PPAF

Plant Common Name

Astilbe, ColorFlash™ False Spirea, False Spirea

General Description

There’s no need to wait for ColorFlash™ to bloom because this fabulous cultivar offers vivid foliage all season long. Hybridized in Europe and introduced by Anthony Tesselaar International, ColorFlash™ false spirea is a regal choice for partially shady sites. While other hybrids offer only variation in flower color, this outstanding performer has leaves in brilliant hues of crisp green, purple-red and burgundy. In fall they turn the vivid sunset shades of gold, orange and red.

This herbaceous perennial blooms in late spring through early summer offering soft fluffy plume-like flower heads held on straight stalks high above the plants. After one year each plant may produce five to nine stalks. These look particularly beautiful against its brightly colored compound foliage.

Plants are clump-forming and benefit from rich, slightly acid organic-rich soil. Even soil moisture is essential for maintaining beauty and overall strength. Consider this Astilbe as a useful problem solver for woodland sites, foundation plantings of shade gardens. Like other astilbes, it prefers filtered or morning sun with afternoon shade. False spirea are typically planted in groups to intensify visibility, but even a single plant of ColorFlash™ would offer enough interest to stand alone.
