ASTILBE chinensis 'Finale'

Image of Astilbe chinensis 'Finale'

Family

Saxifragaceae

Botanical Name

ASTILBE chinensis 'Finale'

Plant Common Name

Chinese Astilbe, Finale False Spirea

General Description

A selection of the Chinese astilbe, ‘Finale’ is a small herbaceous perennial grown for its tolerance of shade, dependable bloom, tall spikes of flowers, and hairy, toothy leaves. It blooms after most astilbes, in mid to late summer, at the top of tall, slender upright stems with spikes that have short widely spaced branches a bit like a rangy Christmas tree. Tiny, closely packed, pink flowers clothe the spikes, transforming them into exceptionally billowing, plumes. One plant may produce several stems, making a haze of bloom above the leaves. The flower stems when in bloom are good for cutting. When bloom ends they can remain attractive into autumn, thanks to their shape.

Like most astilbes, ‘Finale ’ prefers partial shade and fertile, well-drained, moist soil and is almost never eaten by deer and rabbits. While one day of dry soil can wither the leaves of most astilbes, Chinese astilbe has a bit more tolerance for dry conditions. Chinese astilbe also tolerates more sun than most astilbes. Plant ‘Finale’ in partial sun to partial shade, in a bed, border, or woodland, singly or en masse, with hostas and ferns for companions. It is rhizomatous (having underground stems) and spreads slowly, with one plant eventually forming a cluster of plants.
