Branford Beauty Ladyfern
This entry has yet to be reviewed and approved by L2G editors.
Beautiful and lacy best describes the light gray-green foliage with silvery hues on the Branford Beauty ladyfern. A hybrid of Japanese painted fern and ladyfern, it was developed in Branford, Connecticut by Nick Nicou.
The pointed, triangular fronds have a reddish stem and is ornately lined with small, feathery leaflets (pinnae). Each pinna is light green but heavily masked in gray and silver tones, or green with noticeable flecks of gray-silver. It becomes a clumping plant, with the fronds held upright but with a fountain-like form.
Grow the breathtaking Branford Beauty ladyfern in moist, humusy, well-draining soils that are not alkaline. Partial to full shade is best, although some direct sun is okay if soil moisture is constant. This fern is no short of magnificent when grown as a massed groundcover in woodland gardens, or as a nice clumped specimen in a shady mixed border, rockery or in a container. Fronds may be cut and used as a foliage filler for arrangments.
