General Description
Weaver’s bamboo is a clumping tropical bamboo native to southeastern China. This is popular species for furniture and weaving as well as in the landscape.
All bamboos are grasses with woody-type stems called culms which are divided into sections ringed with leaf scars at the nodes. Weaver’s bamboo has tall thin-walled culms which gracefully arch. They are smooth with no teeth or spines and branch on the upper half. The culms often emerge green with a bluish or powdery sheath covering. The leaves are linear to lance-shaped, pedant and produced in pairs.
Flowering in bamboo is unusual, the flowers are similar to other grasses and the fruits grain-like, but the conditions and age of the plant necessary for bloom production are not completely understood. The process seems to occur between two and seven years of age; many bamboos decline and some die after flowering. Since seed are rare, most bamboos are reproduced by division of the clumps.
Bamboo is a tropical grass and prefers moist, well-drained soil and full sun. Weaver’s bamboo is one of the most cold tolerant and will take a few degrees below freezing for a few hours. The spread of this bamboo is slow, the rhizomes or underground stems grow only a short distance from the clump before sending up new culms. Weaver’s bamboos are great plants for containers and make easy to grow, low maintenance in or outdoor screens and hedges.
