General Description

With foliage a dark green with hints of glowing blue, Begonia barsalouxiae leaves are also veined in light green and have light green blotches. Growing from a rhizome (fleshy underground stem), this species is native to the humid mountain rainforests of Honduras.

The rounded heart-shaped leaves are a dark green with a blue undertone and edges of bronze. Across each leaf blade are blotches of light green or vibrant lime green and veins of yellow-green. In late spring or early summer it sends branched, bronzed flower stems high above the mound of leaves to dangle tiny white flowers. Leaves are produced more abundantly in the warmth and humidity of the tropical rainy season, and if temperatures get too chilly or dry it may become fully deciduous.

Grow this lovely rhizomatous begonia in very bright diffused light or partial shade in an organic-rich, sandy soil that is acidic. It grows well as a houseplant if grown in soilless potting media, and is suitable for a large terrarium. Outdoors protect from arid air and drying winds as well as frost. As long as the rhizome does not soften or rot, it will rejuvenate foliage when warmth returns. Outdoors use it as a lovely groundcover in a warm, shady, humid cove alongside tropical ferns and bromeliads.
