General Description

Without a doubt there is no more ornately-foliaged begonia species than the spotted metallic begonia! The long tapering leaves of Begonia brevirimosa are naturally colored in glossy spots of red on green (or bronze-green). A shrub-like tender perennial that only sporadically forms its pink flowers, it is native to the humid tropical mountains of extreme southeastern Asia; in 1913 it was discovered at 3000 feet (950 m) in elevation on New Guinea.

The amazingly colorful leaves are long, tapering ellipses (long ovals) that attach to their leaf stems in an off-center location on the blade. Glossy and ridged where the dark green and deep rose-red colorations are, the leaf edges are also mildly teethed. There are purplish or pink splotches in between the leaf veins. The rarely seen flowers are pink.

Grow spotted metallic begonia in bright diffused light to full shade in a frost-free location in a moist, organic-rich and well-draining soil that is not alkaline. Best in high humidity conditions, it appreciates warmth but not excessive heat (as it is a tropical montane plant) as well as comfortably cool temperatures. It is a lovely accent foliage plant for the mild tropical garden or as a bedding annual for use in containers or hanging basket compositions. It can be a lovely houseplant if the room is bright, warm but high in humidity. The subspecies exotica has full bands of rosy-red inbetween the leaf veins.
