General Description

Cathedral begonia amazes with cup-like leaves that have thin oval sections that let light through, resembling stained glass windows. This tender herbaceous perennial is the result of a old hybrid cross. Each leaf is held upright on long stems. It is cup-shaped and wavy edged, being glossy dark green above and a bronze-burgundy on the underside. In between each leaf vein is an oval area that is thin and transluscent, and is light green when viewed in the burgundy leaf underside. Ivory-pink flowers arise from the clump base in late winter.

Plant Cathedral begonia in a moist, well-drained, acidic to neutral soil in bright light. Making a wonderful houseplant, ensure it has high humidity to prevent leaf browning, and also make sure the soil is never soggy. Outdoors it can be grown as a seasonal bedding annual in shade or in a container, considered perfect in any hanging basket. In tropical regions, Cathedral begonia is an alluring shade groundcover or as an accent planted among small bromeliads and ferns.
