Botanical Name

BEGONIA 'Eureka Green Leaf White'( Semperflorens Cultorum Group, EUREKA SERIES)

Plant Common Name

Eureka White Green Leaf Wax Begonia, Fibrous Begonia, Wax Begonia

General Description

Wax begonias are tender perennials that are normally used as disposable annual bedding plants in temperate and tropical regions. Their roots are fibrous and dense, giving rise to another common name of fibrous begonia. Both dwarf and taller strains have been developed, and all produce perpetual masses of small flowers during warmth. The leaves can be green to red or bronze. In warm climates, these begonias can overwinter and be reliable perennials if moisture is available and summer suns are not scalding. Normally, give semperflorens cultivars a light shade exposure, and the bronze leafed cultivars are generally more tolerant of full sun.

The Eureka series of wax begonia features a full and rounded green or bronze leafed set of cultivars. Eureka cultivars are slightly taller than other wax begonia series, which tend to be shorter and tightly compact in form. They are in constant flower in the warm months and these cultivars perform well in cooler and shadier climates. 'Eureka Green Leaf White' blooms with transluscent white clusters of single flowers. The green foliage will remain its nicest with protection from the hottest afternoon sun. In tropical climates, the green leaf cultivars can handle much more sun only in the winter months.

Wax begonias are continually blooming with adequate light and moisture. They can be deadheaded or pinched back and allowed to rejuvenate. Plants growing in frost free regions can get become a massive, spilling clump in a container or in the garden.
