General Description

Large but irregularly round foliage of 'Holley Moon' is pretty year round in frost-free gardens, but the seasonal splendor of its tall stems of white flowers isn't realized until late winter and early spring. A hybrid rhizomatous begonia, it was created in 2002 by the crossing of the waterlily begonia (Begonia nelumbiifolia) with Begonia carrieae. It becomes a mounding clump of foliage spreading by its thick, crawling rhizomes (underground stems).

The large, bright medium green leaves rise from the tip of the rhizome. The long leaf stems are bright green and attach to the round but irregularly shaped or jagged leaf blade in the center. In late winter and into early spring, bright green stems poke up above the domed mound of foliage to bear a branching cluster of pure white male and female flowers.

Grow 'Holley Moon' from rhizome cuttings and plant in a humusy, well-draining sand or loam in a frost-free location. Tolerating nearly full sun if soil is always moist but not soggy, this cultivar is its finest in partial sun to partial shade. Too much shade and leaves are sparse and flowering is not as abundant. If frosts do nip the foliage, it will resprout provided the rhizome has not also frozen and then rots. Use 'Holley Moon' as a mounding, tall groundcover or accent for the tropical border or under the dappled shade of tall pines, palms or open-branched shade trees.
