General Description

Palm-leaved begonia, a robust Brazilian native, is a tall, shrub-like tender tropical perennial with breathtaking palmate leaves. Each hand-like leaf - made up of 11-20 smaller leaflets that are fleshy and sometimes rippled - is often described as cannibis-like. The leaf stems are a contrasting pink to pink-orange. In spring, long floral stems arise and display creamy white clusters of flowers that are fragrant. Begonia flowers are either male or female, with male blossoms opening first.

Palm-leaved begonia must be grown in frost-free regions in partial to full shade (but bright indirect light). A moist soil is essential to prevent leaf drop, but it is critical that the soil has good drainage. As this begonia can reach a tall height, it is best grown outdoors or indoors in a high-ceiling, bright room or within a conservatory. This begonia can make an outstanding specimen plant certain to attract the curious, even though it can be difficult to successfully grow and perpetuate this finicky begonia.
