General Description
Madame Queen begonia dazzles with large, coppery-green leaves with ornately ruffled edges and tall sprays of deep pink flower in late winter. This tender herbaceous perennial is the result of a hybrid cross and grows from a prostrate stem called a rhizome. New leaves emerge very red and mature to a dark green with coppery blushing. The upright leaf stems are a bold green-yellow, as are the veins in each leaf blade. The leaf edges are intricately ruffled and often reveal glimpses of the rusty red leaf undersides. Very early spring finds tall branched stems of deep pink flowers reaching above the foliage.
Plant 'Madame Queen' in a moist, well-drained, acidic to neutral soil in bright shade. Making a wonderful houseplant, ensure it has high humidity to prevent leaf browning, and also make sure the soil is never soggy. Outdoors it can be grown as a seasonal bedding annual in shade or in a container. In tropical regions, 'Madame Queen' is a magificent shade groundcover or as an accent planted among bromeliads and ferns.
