General Description
Phoe's Cleo begonia brightens the shade garden with its star-like, lime-green leaves with speckled edges of dark red. This tender herbaceous perennial is the result of a hybrid cross and grows from a prostrate stem called a rhizome. Each leaf has tiny jagged edges on its pointed lobes and is populated by scores of dark reddish brown spots. In mid- to late winter pink flowers appear among foliage and the red leaf stems.
Plant 'Phoe's Cleo' in a moist, well-drained, acidic to neutral soil in bright shade. Making a wonderful houseplant, ensure it has high humidity to prevent leaf browning, and also soil is never soggy. Outdoors it can be grown as a seasonal bedding annual in shade or in a container. In tropical regions, this begonia cultivar is an alluring shade groundcover or as an accent planted among other dark-leaf begonias, small bromeliads and ferns.
