General Description
Numerous hibiscus-like flowers that are white an pink cover the bushy Pin-Up™ Rose tuberous begonia. It also has lush dark green leaves with lighter veins. Belonging to the Tuberhybrida Group of begonias derived from mountain-growing species native to the South American Andes, it grows from winter-dormant root tubers. The numerous flowers are bicolored with a yellow center, petals white with blushes of pink on their edges. Blossoms are heavily produced in summer to mid-autumn, and are set among open, succulent stems across the plant. They are produced in a cluster of three buds, with two smaller female flowers next to the larger, showier male flower. Leaves are fleshy and jagged, glossy and dark green in color with lighter green veins.
Pin-Up™ Rose tuberous begonia needs a rich but well-drained soil in a partially shaded garden location. It should receive direct sunlight only early in the morning. Since it's tropical, it most often is grown in containers indoors, or if outdoors, in areas with warm winters and comfortable (not overly hot) summers. Excessive heat and humidity in summer will readily diminish this begonia. When a plant begins to yellow in the autumn after flowering, reduce watering to induce the natural winter dormancy. In cold climates, this is the time that the tubers should be lifted and stored inside in a cool, dry location until buds reappear in the spring. Tubers may be replanted in pots or outdoors once danger of frost has passed and soil temperatures are warm.
