Image of Begonia (Rex Cultorum Group, GREAT AMERICAN CITIES™ SERIES)

Family

Begoniaceae

Botanical Name

BEGONIA( Rex Cultorum Group, GREAT AMERICAN CITIES™ SERIES)

Plant Common Name

Great American Cities™ Rex Begonia

General Description

Rex begonias in the Great American Cities™ Series are colorful, compact, heat- and salt-tolerant, and reliably evergreen.

Modern Rex begonias are complex hybrids that derive from crosses between the Southeast Asian native Begonia rex and other rhizomatous begonias. Cultivars in the Great American Cities™ Series form dense, compact rosettes of triangular to oval leaves in a broad range of showy colors and patterns. The leaf blades have finely to coarsely toothed edges and cleft, sometimes coiled bases. Plants stay in leaf through winter if given adequate warmth and moisture. Sparse sprays of small pink or white flowers are sporadically produced.

Hardy only in frost-free climates, Rex begonias are almost always grown in containers. They do best in filtered or oblique sunlight and moderate to high humidity. Mist the foliage or place the container on a tray of pebbles in shallow water to boost humidity. Excessive heat, particularly on summer nights, will slowly degrade these colorful rex begonia selections.
