BEGONIA 'Richmondensis'

Image of Begonia 'Richmondensis'

Jessie Keith

Family

Begoniaceae

Botanical Name

BEGONIA 'Richmondensis'

Plant Common Name

Begonia, Richmond Begonia

General Description

Both the leaves and flowers of the Richmond begonia are noteworthy. It blooms with : salmony-pink flowers nearly year round and displays leaves that are green with reddened edges and undersides. The leaves are succulent and oval, with small teeth on their edges and often held a slight fold down the center. Stems and leaf undersides are reddish, and increased light exposure intensifies the red blush all across the plant. If free from frost, it flowers non-stop year round.

Grow 'Richmondensis' in a site with bright filtered light to partial sun and moist, well-drained, acid to neutral soil. Deeper shade causes leaves to be much more green. Pinch back the stems on occasion to keep the plant fresh and full. Outdoors it can be grown as an annual bedding or container plant and in frost-free regions, 'Richmondensis' makes a robust landscape plant that looks great planted among ferns in a mixed setting or as edging.

There is a white-flowering variant of this cultivar that should be planted in more shade for best health and beauty.
