General Description

Compact and with architecturally interesting leaves, ‘River Nile' is a hybrid begonia that arises from a prostrate rhizome. Its lobed, almost star-like leaves are a bright green with blackened edges with a reddish ruffle, and the leaf edge spirals in the leaf center. In late winter it produces a lovely display of pale pink flowers. This Terra Nova introduction is a vigorous grower well-suited for container culture.

Grow 'River Nile' in a site with bright filtered light and moist, well-drained, acid to neutral soil. It makes a wonderful houseplant so long as it’s provided high humidity, to prevent leaf browning, and the soil is allowed to dry out slightly between watering. Outdoors it can be grown as a bedding plant or hanging basket for bright shade. In frost-free regions, the River Nile begonia is a robust landscape plant that looks exquisite planted among bromeliads and ferns.
