General Description

Large, fuzzy leaves with bronze-red undersides are the highlight of the hybrid San Miguel begonia. This shrub-like, tender tropical perennial grows from a thick rhizome. Its hairy leaves are lopsided and look like elephant ears, complete with occasional knicks and flops. They are a dulled gray green and contrast with the stems and leaf undersides which are a soft bronze-red. In winter it produces a somewhat hidden display of white to light pink flowers.

Grow 'San Miguel' in a site with bright filtered light and moist, well-drained, acid to neutral soil. It makes a wonderful houseplant so long as it’s provided humidity, to prevent leaf browning, and the soil is allowed to dry out slightly between watering. Outdoors it can be displayed in a patio container where the fuzzy leaves will be readily noticed. In frost-free regions, 'San Miguel' is a delicate landscape plant that looks great planted among small bromeliads and ferns, or as a massed accent.
