General Description

A large plant family with many ornamental species important to horticulture, Iridaceae (the Iris Family) comprises approximately 92 genera and 1800 species. Species exist nearly worldwide and are rarest in tropical lowlands. The most Iridaceae-rich part of the world is South Africa. Nearly all family members are herbaceous perennials with a few rare annuals in the mix. These may be evergreen or deciduous and may arise from rhizomes, bulbs, or corms. A few species are shrub-like.

Foliage is linear with parallel venation and may be broad and flattened or grass-like. The typical Iridaceae flower, or perianthe, has six joined, showy tepals that appear in two whorls of three. Flower size, shape and color varies widely. The most common colors are variable hues of white, yellow, red, purple, violet or blue. Floral spotting is not uncommon. Fruits are dry, brown, capsules with chambers that open to release variable seeds that are often large and dark colored. Insects are the chief pollinators.

Culture is species specific, but most Iris family members grow best in full to partial sun and upland soils. Many are highly ornamental, much-prized garden plants. The most popular of these are irises, but Crocus, Gladiolus, Freesia, Crocosmia, Belamcanda and the like are also beautiful garden essentials. Many of the flowers produced by these plants are long-lasting when cut and essential to the cut-flower industry.
