BELLIS perennis 'Habanera Red'( HABANERA SERIES)
English Daisy, Habanera Red English Daisy
The saucy ‘Habanera Red’ is a far cry from the typical English daisy. This charming, small, short-lived perennial is heavy-flowering and offers big semi-double daisies of magenta red above ground-hugging clumps of bright green foliage. Wild English daisies originate from the European grasslands and forest margins as far east as Turkey but are most commonly associated with England where they are favored. All grow best where summers are cool and temperate.
This cultivar produces small basal clumps of semi-evergreen foliage that slowly spread by rhizomes. The big, loose, semi-double flowers have distinctly quilled petals that are deep pinkish red. The flowers appear atop short leafless stems from late winter to summer and sporadically into mid-fall. They are attractive to bees and are easy to grow in the right climate.
English daisy grows and flowers best in full sun and fertile, moist soil. It blooms for longer if its spent flowerheads are removed. High heat and humidity are enemies of this plant. It fact, when growing conditions become unfavorably steamy English daisy will stop flowering. This cheerful perennial makes a fine addition to cottage garden, perennial border edges and meadow plantings. Its small size also makes it suitable for container compositions.
