BERBERIS thunbergii f. atropurpurea 'Bailone'(RUBY CAROUSEL®)
Purpleleaf Japanese Barberry, Ruby Carousel® Barberry
Purpleleaf Japanese barberry selection ‘Bailone' -- marketed as Ruby Carousel® -- is a compact, mounded shrub with glossy red-purple leaves. Leaf color is best if grown in full sun. Small, green, insignificant, summer flower give way in the fall to attractive bright red fruit which persists into winter. Cultivar 'Bailone' is on the United States Department of Agriculture’s list of rust resistant barberries.
Ruby Carousel® Japanese barberry is a tough, sun-loving plant that is tolerant of many soil types and sites. It has been known to self-sow and can become somewhat invasive. Though thorny, it is suitable for hedges and foundation plantings and makes a nice accent plant for mixed borders. Take care not to plant barberry in areas where children play.
Berberis thunbergii is sometimes considered an invasive plant particularly in the eastern United States. It can form dense thickets in natural areas where it changes soil characteristics and displaces wildlife. For more information about the invasiveness of barberry see the National Park Service’s factsheet at http://www.nps.gov/plants/alien/fact/beth1.htm .
