BERBERIS thunbergii 'Lime Glow'
Japanese Barberry, Lime Glow Barberry
Japanese barberry is a dense, upright multi-stemmed shrub that is native to eastern Asia and Japan. A yellow-green version of 'Rose Glow', selection 'Lime Glow' produces glossy, bright-green, mottled leaves which turn orange, scarlet and/or red-purple in the fall. This yellowish cultivar has enough green leaf pigment to resist scorching in full sun. Bright red berries, which are attractive to birds, appear in late summer to fall and persist into winter.
Lime Glow barberry can self-sow, making a thicket after a couple years. Thorny, but still suitable for hedges and barriers, it also makes a nice accent plant. This is a tough, sun-loving plant that is tolerant of many soil types and sites. Lime Glow barberry is on the United States Department of Agriculture's list of rust-resistant barberries.
