BERBERIS thunbergii 'Maria'(SUNJOY GOLD PILLAR™) PP18082
Japanese barberry is a dense, upright multi-stemmed shrub that is native to eastern Asia and Japan. Sunjoy Gold Pillar™ barberry, known as cultivar 'Maria', has red new growth which develops into scorch-resistant, glossy bright yellow to yellow-green leaves. These turn orange-red in the fall. Bright red berries, which are attractive to birds, appear in late summer to fall and persist into winter. It has a distinctive upright habit and has been known to self-sow.
Thorny, but still suitable for hedges and barriers, it also makes a nice accent plant. This is a tough, sun-loving plant that is tolerant of many soil types and sites. Barberry 'Maria' is on the United States Department of Agriculture's list of rust resistant barberries.
