General Description

A vigorous, compact yet mounding shrub, this hybrid barberry boasts lustrous foliage and bluish-black fruits by fall. Frikart's barberry is evergreen. It's the result of crossing Chinese barberry Berberis candidula with warty barberry B. verruculosa. The spiny branches are tan to salmon-brown.

The glossy green leaves are oval and spine-tipped, often with edges that roll under. Leaf undersides are whitish. In late spring, small yellow flowers appear. After insect pollination, small black fruits develop. The fruits have a purplish to blue coating on them. Although evergreen, winter's chill causes some foliage to turn red.

Grow Frikart's barberry in full sun to bright partial shade. Any moderately fertile soil with good drainage works, although avoid highly alkaline soils. Use this shrub in foundation beds en masse or as a specimen. Cultivars 'Telstar' and 'Amstelveen' are smaller in mature stature.
