BERGENIA cordifolia 'Winter Glow' ('('Winterglut')')
Elephant's Ears, Heartleaf Bergenia, Pig Squeak, Winter Glow Heartleaf Bergenia
A selection of Heartleaf Bergenia, ‘Winter Glow’ is a clump-forming, evergreen perennial with large, rounded, toothed, dark green leathery leaves that turn reddish-bronze in autumn and return to green in spring. It produces small, nodding, bright-magenta, cup-shaped flowers in loosely arranged groups on a fleshy stem in early spring. The parent species is native to woods and rocky terrain of the Himalayas and Tibet. At the limits of its hardiness, its leaves may die back over the winter and new leaves may arise when flowering ends the following spring. Leaves that look weatherbeaten in spring should be removed to keep the plant fresh.
Grow ‘Winter Glow’ in full sun in cool sun in cool climates or partial sun to partial shade in warmer climates. It thrives in cool soil with good drainage. Use it as edging for paths and walkways, massed as a groundcover for contrasts of height and texture in a bed or border, in a rock garden, or at the edge of a wooded border in combination with hostas and ferns. Clumps may be divided in early fall or after blooming in spring every 4 to 5 years if desired.
