BERGENIA( EDEN SERIES)
This entry has yet to be reviewed and approved by L2G editors.
Eden Series Bergenia is a group of a clump forming evergreen perennials with large, rounded, toothed, dark green leathery leaves with red undersides. Small, nodding, pink to magenta, cup-shaped flowers appear in loosely arranged groups on upright fleshy stems in mid to late spring. The foliage turns to red in autumn. (At the limits of its cold hardiness, the foliage may die back then re-emerge at the end of bloom cycle.) Plants included in the Eden Series are the cultivars 'Eden's Magic Giant' and the red-edged 'Eden's Dark Margin'.
This perennial prefers sun or part shade and protection from extreme drying winds. It thrives in a cool soil that has good drainage. Unlike many woodland plants, bergenia is said to be deer- and rabbit-resistant. Plant bergenia in a dappled sun location at the edge of a wooded border in combination with hostas and ferns or as an addition to a rock garden.
