BETULA pendula (PURPLE RAIN™)

Image of Betula pendula 'Monte' (PURPLE RAIN™)

Family

Betulaceae

Botanical Name

BETULA pendula 'Monte'(PURPLE RAIN™)

Plant Common Name

Common Birch, European White Birch, Purple Rain™ European White Birch, Silver Birch

General Description

European white birch is a softly pyramidal tree when young, becoming more rounded at maturity with graceful arching branches. The cultivar 'Monte' features deeply-cut, diamond-shaped, lacy purple leaves which contrast beautifully with its exfoliating white bark. Small greenish catkins (pendant flowering stalks) appear in the spring and are quite eye-catching. Purple Rain European white birch is a handsome tree and is very effective as a specimen. However, its use is declining due to its high susceptibility to birch borer attack.

European white birch is tolerant of both wet and dry soils in full sun. This handsome tree has been used extensively in the cool-climate park landscapes.
