Pride of Place Plants, Inc.

Family

Betulaceae

Botanical Name

BETULA pendula 'White Edge'

Plant Common Name

European White Birch, White Edge Birch

General Description

European white birch is a softly pyramidal tree when young, becoming more rounded at maturity with graceful arching branches. The cultivar 'White Edge' features beautiful white, exfoliating bark and creamy-margined, diamond-shaped,lacy leaves. Small greenish catkins appear in the spring and are quite eye-catching. The fall foliage is yellow.

European white birch is tolerant of both wet and dry soils in full sun. This handsome tree has been used extensively in the cool-climate park landscapes and is best suited for use in the border or as a focal point. Unfortunately, it has a high susceptibility to birch borer attack.
