Family

Betulaceae

Botanical Name

BETULA platyphylla

Plant Common Name

Asian White Birch

General Description

Manchurian white birch is a medium-sized, conical, deciduous tree native to northeast Asia. In addition to its creamy-white bark, which provides year-round display, it features pale green leaves from late spring through summer, golden fall color, and tan catkins in early spring. Several cultivars of Manchurian birch are available. All favor full sun or light shade and reasonably fertile, well-drained soil. It works well as a specimen plant or in small groupings. It is resistant to the birch borer that afflicts European birch.
